Have a Desk Job? Recent studies are showing that 30 minutes per day in the gym is not enough to counteract the detrimental effects of 8-10 hours of sitting each day. It is estimated that 50%-70% of Americans sit 6 hours or more while at work and this is linking directly to an increased risk in heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancers, hypertension and depression.
The remedy? Increase your non-exercise activity any way you can while at work
Getting up one time each hour is enough to counteract the risks of disease so try walking around while you are on the phone, schedule standing/walking meetings, or intentionally put your garbage can or printer farther from your desk so you are forced to stand. Even just set a timer and take a spin to the water cooler for a drink. Any of these simple strategies will go a long way towards increasing your longevity and keeping you healthy.
